Thought I'd include the picture of the Norwegian flag seeing us how we're on their island!!! It was some sort of national day so the flags were all flying on their poles. Never found out what they were out for really.

On the final day of the trip we were logging the rock strata on a stretch of coast at Festningen. While we were logging, the tide came in and we had to put on survival suits to carry on working so we didn't get soaked. They're completely water tight and allow you to float about in the water. All good fun!!!

This is Scottbreen in all its glory!!! It was quite a nice glacier!!

Me having a great time walking along the snout of the Scottbreen glacier at Bellsund. It was a great day, wandering about on the glacier and looking at a bit of geology too.

We had a massive camp fire one night near the end of the Field Trip. It was an old whaling station so there were old wooden whaling boats there as well as various whale bones. It was another great night with lots of beer and flame grilled food!!!

This is the Russian mining town of Barentsburg as we arrived at the harbour. It was just like Pyramiden but with people. Although having said that we turned up at eleven, and noone was about anyway. We visited the bar, and tried some Russian Vodka which was a new experience. Needless to say everyone felt a bit tender the next day!!!

This is the Quarter to midnight sun taken from Stockholm. It was just on the way to Barentsburg and was a glorious night of sunshine!!!!

This is a doline seen at Kapp Linne. Its a collapsed in cave which would have been situated in the bedrock. Its fills up with water which then can't escape. I put it in because I like the reflection of the guys looking into it at the pond at its base!!

Me taking in the view at Janusfjellet after a days hard Geology.

We havn't seen a polar bear yet, and this is as close as we've come so far, seeing these massive foot prints in the mud as we came back from a days work in the field at Basilikaelva.

This is in Pyramiden just in front of the sports hall/library/cinema!! The bust of Lenin's situated in the town square. I think this was taken at about half eleven at night, and it was still light!!!

Me in front of the Nordenskioldbreen Glacier. We went to see it just after visiting the abandoned Russian mining town of Pyramiden. Its calving into Billefjorden so there were lots of small ice bergs hitting the ship!!

We saw two whales as we were leaving Adventfjorden and going into Isfjorden. This one swam right past the front of the boat.

We went on the Geology Field Trip a week after we arrived. We were cruising around the Fjords for 10 days on the ship Stockholm. It was a really nice ship with a really friendly crew, and the most fantastic food ever!!!

This fella is a Kittywake!! He sometimes flies around Nybyen, and if you open your window up, it'll come and land on it!! It landed on my window, just as I was going out and then peered at me through the glass, as though expecting something for its trouble!!

We bumped into this reindeer a couple of times on the way to UNIS. They just seem to wander in and out of town. There was another one that was trying to shed his antler skin by headbutting a lamp post cable!!

This is Brakke 11 where I'm staying. I'm on the second floor. Its just like being in a small Hall of Residence, with communal kitchens and then its two people to each bathroom. I think there are four of these housing only UNIS students.

This little fella came visiting when were having a party in the Barracks, and was just pottering around Nybyen without a care in the world!

This is UNIS, where all the magic happens!! The section on the right is new and is still being built! It won't be finished until December apparently. The darker brown section on the left is the original UNIS building where we have all our lectures. Its where all the lecture rooms, labs, and stuff are!! Its great!!!

Hi Everyone,

This is a photo of Nybyen where all the student barracks are. I'm in Brakke 11 which is just behind where this photo was taken from. Its situated at at the end of Longyearbyen. UNIS is away in the distance by the Fjord, so its a bit of a trek each day to lectures!!!
